Ned Lamont Campaigns with Chellie Pingree

Former U.S. Senate Candidate, Who Galvanized Democratic Opposition to Bush Iraq Policy, Praises Pingree for Pioneering Stance Against the War in 2002

Portland, ME (August 12, 2007): Ned Lamont, one of the most visible anti-war candidates in 2006, hit the campaign trail today with Chellie Pingree to throw his support behind her campaign for Maine's first congressional district.

Lamont, who led the charge against pro-war incumbent Joe Lieberman for Senate in 2006, stands united with Pingree in her strong opposition to the war in Iraq.

Pingree came out against the war in the late summer of 2002 and publicly opposed the resolution authorizing force in Iraq and the President's rush to war repeatedly throughout August, September and October before and after Congress voted on the Iraq Resolution.

"We need candidates who will put the priorities of the American people before political jockeying," Lamont explains. Chellie Pingree wasn't afraid to speak up against the war in Iraq when the political sentiment was set against her, even though she knew the price she might have to pay. The people of Maine can count on Chellie to stand up for them and do whatever it takes to ensure that their voices are heard," said Lamont.

The Pingree campaign enthusiastically accepted Lamont's endorsement:

"I'm honored to have Ned's support," says Pingree. "He knows what it takes to stand up for Democratic values and I'm extremely pleased to have him campaigning alongside me. With his help, I am determined to deliver the kind of change we here in Maine know Washington desperately needs."

Lamont said he was enthusiastically supporting Pingree because he knows she will work hard to bring Maine values to Washington - whether fighting for responsible foreign policy, fair prescription drug pricing, election reform, or environmental protection.

Lamont and Pingree appeared together at two events on Sunday, August 12, at the home of Amy and Thomas Haible in Harpswell and at the Space Gallery in Portland.
