Portland, ME (Oct. 15, 2007): Chellie Pingree, candidate for Congress from Maine¹s First Congressional District, was the guest of honor at a house party organized by Henry & Christine Ingwerson on Sunday, October 14. Pingree visited Kennebunkport as part of her plan to campaign in every town in the First Congressional District all 125 of them through local campaign gatherings that reflect each community, its character and how the residents really come together. The Ingwersons live at 26 Batson Creek Road and the party, which took place from 3:00 P.M. to 5:00 P.M., was open to the public. Approximately 30 local residents were in attendance.
"Thank you to Henry and Christine for organizing this event. I am glad for this opportunity to talk about why I am running to represent the First Congressional District. I am always pleased to attend events like this one and I am very interested to hear about the issues that important to the people of York County," said Pingree.
"It¹s time for real change in this country," Pingree said. "Six years of George Bush and the Republicans in Congress have severely harmed our country. They deliberately squandered America¹s economic, military, and moral authority and there is much to be done to repair our standing in the world and refocus our priorities here at home. First and foremost, we need to start by ending the war in Iraq."
Chellie Pingree has lived in the community of North Haven for more than thirty years, raising her children and operating a small business in that town of 350 people. Pingree has dedicated much of her life to public service, holding posts on the school board and as the local tax assessor, before being elected in 1992 to represent Knox County in to the Maine State Senate. Pingree served in the Legislature for 8 years, including 4 as Senate Majority Leader. After her strong but ultimately unsuccessful bid for the U.S. Senate in 2002, Pingree was selected to serve as national president of Common Cause, a non-partisan grassroots organization with a thirty-year history of promoting open, honest, and accountable government.
"There are certain principles that are a way of life here in Maine that we need to take to Washington: Caring for our neighbors. Being accountable for our actions. Using basic common sense to solve problems."
"For the past thirty years, these are the principles I learned and lived by as a citizen of a small town in Maine," said Pingree. "The people of Maine can count on me to take these same Maine values to Washington."
