To the Editor,
Joan Mooney and the Wells Democratic Committee were pleased to host a house party for U.S. Congressional District 1 candidate Chellie Pingree.
Pingree has graciously attended parties all across this district, answering questions and listening to voter's concerns. During the Wells party, she fielded questions about the economy, the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan, as well as immigration and health care reform. Filling Congressman Tom Allen's shoes is a daunting task but Pingree aptly displayed she is ready for the challenge. She also made the point that with her experience, she will be "hitting the ground running" should she be elected.
Answering questions on the Iraq war, Chellie stated she is in favor of a careful and gradual withdrawal of our troops with the Iraqis taking responsibility for their own government. She is not in favor of establishing permanent military bases in Iraq.
Regarding the economy, she stated money being poured into Iraq should be invested in rebuilding our economy at home and working toward a single-payer health care system, which she is prepared to work diligently for.
Regarding immigration, she believes existing immigration laws must be enforced, including prosecuting employers who break the law and employ illegal immigrants. Voters were encouraged to learn more about her positions on all the pertinent issues facing us today by logging onto Chellie's Web site. Guests were indeed fortunate to have Chellie address them and answer their questions Thursday evening and many thanks were exchanged to Joan Mooney and the Wells Democratic Committee for hosting the event.
In closing, remember the Democratic Primary will be held Tuesday, June 10, so please take the time to get out and vote.
